En 1868, Roger Acton publie le récit de l’expédition punitive britannique contre l’Empereur éthiopien Tewodros II, basé sur les ouvrages à sa disposition, la correspondance des otages, le témoignages des officiers et scientifiques engagés et des notes inédites. On n’en saura pas plus car l’ouvrage est dépourvu de bibliographie. Le lecteur se concentrera plus sur les cents gravures que l’in-folio contient sans oublier le frontispice et le titre magnifiquement illustré. De fait, la réédition de ces lithographies en un volume fait toute l’originalité de la publication, dispensant le lecteur de chercher les illustrations dans les numéros de l’Illustrated London News[1].
La réalisation des gravures revient au lithographe du magazine, Mason Jackson[2], qui n’avait, la plus part du temps, que deux ou trois jours pour préparer leur impression le prochain samedi. Même si ces préparatifs ne sont pas une sinécure, l’honneur doit être réservé aux auteurs des croquis originaux, dont l’envoyé spécial du célèbre journal, le journaliste et artiste William Simpson[3], le Major Baigrie[4] et d’autres correspondants et artistes amateurs. Et c’est là où le bât blesse car Acton ne prend pas la peine de créditer les gravures comme les droits d’auteurs l’obligent aujourd’hui.
